Pupils help pupils
Maximum Safety on the School Bus. The School Bus Escort project is specifically aimed at pupils in years 7 to 9 at all secondary schools in the VBN area. For an average of four days, specially trained mobility trainers educate the volunteer pupils in better interactions on and around the bus. They are supported by colleagues from the relevant police regions. The School Bus Escort project is based on the fact that young people – if trained appropriately – can easily assess conflict situations among themselves and react accordingly. It is a project for civil courage and against violence – without violence.
The basic concept for the project comes from Bochum, where School Bus Escorts have been successfully trained by the transport company for more than 20 years. Today, this project exists in many transport associations and cities in Germany.
The project, which is free for the participating schools, was initiated in 2011 by Zweckverband Verkehrsverbund Bremen/Niedersachsen (ZVBN) and has been funded since then. Currently, eleven schools in the VBN area are involved in the project. So far, more than 1.000 pupils have been trained as School Bus Escorts or Bus Guides, as a result of which safety on the school buses in the VBN area has increased greatly.
